On Saturday January 21st almost a thousand bibliophiles and readers gathered for the second annual Montgomery County Teen Book Festival. Pulitzer Prize winning author H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger presented this year’s keynote address. His best-selling book Friday Night Lights describes the impact of high school football on small-town life and in particular the small-town culture of Odessa, Texas. In 2004 the book also became a movie. James “Boobie” Miles, former Permian High School Panther running back who was featured in both the book and the movie, joined Mr. Bissinger for a portion of his presentation. In addition to the general session, authors Chris Crutcher, Margaret Peterson Haddix, Sherry Garland, and Ceil Cleveland spoke about their books and the writing process. All authors signed autographs and answered questions after their presentations. Books and refreshments were on sale in the Commons and participants were treated to music performed by members of the College Park Orchestra and local DJ, Wally Barnes. Written comments by attendees included the following: “I loved meeting authors. It makes me want to read all their books!” and “I can’t wait ‘til next year!” We are looking forward to it, too!
